ROUTE 66 BLOCKS

Made from hardwood, painted with acrylic and and sealed with polyurethane, these blocks were custom designed for Tulsa's Route 66 Commission to evoke the shapes and lines of the architecture and built environment of Route 66. Specifically, these blocks have a 1:4 scale, versus the typical 1:2 of most block sets, as the environment of our early highway systems gave rise to a style of building* that could be seen both from afar and at high speeds, creating taller and longer structures. I also took inspiration from midcentury design trends generally, as that's when the Mother Road enjoyed her heyday. These blocks are available to play with at Route 66 Commission outreach events.

*Sadly this style of building has seeped into our urban fabric, losing it's unique look as it simply becomes suburban sprawl, as highways have become a bloated and unnecessary part of our culture.
